Florence Information on Volunteering and Support

The System Office has established a dedicated web page related to Hurricane Florence which you can view at: The UNC System Office Information Page
The Office of State Human Resources (O.S.H.R.) has increased the number of paid Community Service Leave (C.S.L.) hours from 24 to 40 hours for the remainder of 2018. If you are interested in volunteering, you are encouraged to sign up through the State’s Volunteer Website. Donations towards the larger Hurricane Florence recovery effort can be made through the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund and the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund.

Closer to home, the Staff Senate is holding a drive to help restock the shelves of the Spartan Open Pantry (see attached flyer). “Six students and our staff stayed to operate the food pantry for those needing help preparing for hurricane Florence after the university closed at noon. We gave 770 lbs. of food this week! That is more than we gave in the whole month of August!” You can see the need is great. Please find a bin near you. You can also start your own bin. Just let us know and, at the end of the drive, we will make arrangements to pick it up.

  • The need is constant.
  • The gratification is instant.

Accepting Applications for Janet B. Royster (JBR) Memorial Staff Scholarship

On Friday, August 31, 2018 the UNC System Staff Assembly began accepting applications for the Janet B. Royster (JBR) Memorial Staff Scholarship. The deadline is Wednesday, October 31, 2018.

The Janet B. Royster (JBR) Memorial Staff Scholarship Fund was created in August of 2011 by the UNC System Staff Assembly in memory of UNC-TV employee Janet B. Royster. Janet represented UNC-TV on the General Administration Staff Forum and was subsequently elected to the UNC Staff Assembly. She served as its first Parliamentarian until her untimely death in June 2011. This scholarship promotes staff development for permanent, full-time, non-faculty employees, as well as recognizes and honors Janet’s leadership and dedication to all UNC employees.

The JBR Memorial Staff Scholarship provides an annual award, based on the availability of funds. Scholarships provide assistance towards earning a degree or other professional certification and development. The maximum award amount per academic year is $1,000. Awards are not automatically renewable. Recipients are selected by a Selection Committee. Some of the following factors will be considered by the committee in making selections:

  • The educational goals of the applicant
  • The financial needs of the applicant
  • The commitment of the applicant to their UNC System employer institution
  • The relationship of the educational program to the applicant’s job

In addition to the application, you will also need two letters of recommendation, a copy of your UNC System employee identification card, and a copy of your resume or CV. You may also include information about the course or training which you are seeking.

Visit Janet B. Royster Scholarship Website for more information.
